Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat [still] in the house.
Note 13 at Jn. 11:20: It is not clear from this passage why Mary stayed in the house. It would appear from Mary's actions in verse 29 and her statement in verse 32 that she simply hadn't heard the news that Jesus had come at the same time that her sister Martha heard.
