Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat [still] in the house.
Note 13 at Joh 11:20: It is not clear from this passage why Mary stayed in the house. It would appear from Mary's actions in Joh 11:29 and her statement in Joh 11:32 that she simply hadn't heard the news that Jesus had come at the same time that her sister, Martha, heard.
