And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
Note 20 at Jn. 11:42: Jesus had already communicated with His Father about this matter and really did not need to pray to perform this miracle. He prayed publicly so that everyone present would once again be reminded that He was sent from the Father.
