Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
Note 1 at Joh 13:1: The Greek word used for "end" here is "TELOS," and it signifies "the utmost degree of an act" (Vine's Expository Dictionary). John was stating the degree to which Jesus loved His disciples rather than a period of time. Then he began to relate the instance of Jesus washing His disciples' feet, which illustrates this point.
