Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

Note 1 at Jn. 13:1: The Greek word used for "end" here is "telos" and it signifies "the utmost degree of an act" (W.E. Vine). John is stating the degree to which Jesus loved His disciples rather than a period of time. Then he begins to relate the instance of Jesus washing His disciples' feet which illustrates this point
