John 13:18 |
Next Verse |
I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
Note 10 at Jn. 13:18: This eating of bread, prophesied in Psalm 41:9, of Jesus' betrayer, could have simply referred to Judas having shared meals with Jesus. This would symbolize intimacy or friendship and would make the betrayal much more painful than if it had been done by a stranger.
It is also possible, since Jesus quoted this prophecy during the last supper, that this eating of bread, prophesied by David could be referring to the betrayer sharing the specific bread of the New Covenant or communion with Jesus. If so, the transgression of violating this New Covenant would be even more severe than violating the covenant of friendship.
As Paul explained in 1 Corinthians 11:27-29, the consequences of eating this bread of the Lord's Supper unworthily was damnation. Judas might have been the first person guilty of "eating and drinking damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body."
