John 14:27
Previous Verse
John 14:27
Next Verse

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Note 37 at Jn. 14:27: Peace is something that can be given (Mt. 10:13; Lk. 10:5-6).

Note 38 at Jn. 14:27: Jesus distinguishes His peace from what the world calls peace. In the world's mentality, peace is the absence of problems. However, God's peace is not dependent on circumstances. It is dependent only on God Himself who is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb. 13:8). A Christian can have great peace even in the midst of terrible problems because his faith is in God. "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee" (Isa. 26:3).

Note 39 at Jn. 14:27: As in verse 1 (see note 2 at Jn. 14:1, p. 431), "you" is the understood subject of this sentence. That means that the responsibility of not letting our hearts be troubled is ours. Jesus has given us His peace, but we have to receive it by faith to keep our hearts from being troubled.

Note 40 at Jn. 14:27: Most people identify with fear in certain situations and think it only normal. However, God did not give us the spirit of fear (2 Tim. 1:7) and Jesus' command shows that we have the power to reject fear
