If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before [it hated] you.

Note 66 at Joh 15:18: Satan will often try to use persecution or affliction to bring us into self-pity. It always helps to recognize that our problems aren't unique. Peter shared that afflictions are common to all believers (1Pe 5:9) in an effort to encourage the saints, and here Jesus was employing this same truth to keep His disciples from being offended (Joh 16:1).
