And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
Note 110 at Jn. 17:22: The Greek word rendered "glory" in this verse is "doxa." According to W.E. Vine, "glory is used of the nature and acts of God in self-manifestation, i.e., what He essentially is and does, as exhibited in whatever way He reveals Himself. . ." (W.E. Vine; Expository Dictionary of N.T. Words, p. 153). Therefore, Jesus giving us the same glory that His Father gave Him means He has given us that divine nature (2 Pet. 1:4) and the power that comes with it to enable His followers to walk in this unity (see note 108 at Jn. 17:21, above). There are reasons but no excuses for the division in the body of Christ.
