Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
Note 2 at Joh 18:14: Josephus, a first-century historian, wrote that Caiaphas was deposed from being high priest by the Roman governor Vitellius (The Antiquities of the Jews, Book 18, Chapter 4, Section 3) shortly after the crucifixion of Jesus.
