For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
Note 12 at Jn. 19:36: John alone mentions that Jesus' legs were not broken and relates that to the fulfillment of the prophecies of Numbers 9:12 and Psalm 34:20. Breaking the legs of the condemned meant that they could no longer raise themselves up and gasp for air and would therefore die soon (see note 6 at Jn. 19:18, p. 473). Since Jesus was already dead, they didn't break His legs. John sees this as very significant, making special mention of it and emphasizes its importance in helping us believe (v. 35).
