Next Verse

For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

Note 1 at Jn. 20:9: It is interesting to note that out of all the times Jesus had prophesied His death and resurrection (see note 1 at Mt. 16:21, p. 202), He had not linked His resurrection to the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy (He did use the prophet Jonah as an illustration -- Mt. 12:39- 40; Lk. 11:29-32). In His other teachings and responses to the elders, He had often taught from scripture, but when revealing His death and resurrection, He had simply stated what would happen.

After His resurrection, Jesus systematically took all the Old Testament scriptures concerning His death and resurrection and expounded them to two of His disciples (Lk. 24:27) on the road to Emmaus. Later that same day, He opened the understanding of the scriptures to His other disciples and once again explained these Old Testament prophecies to them.
