John 21:18
Next Verse

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry [thee] whither thou wouldest not.

Note 15 at Jn. 21:18: Jesus is characterizing Peter's past life and prophesying his future. Peter had been a self-confident youth who did just what he wanted to do. However, in his old age, he would learn to submit himself to God to such a degree that he would even follow the Lord to a martyr's death (v. 19). There is no Biblical record of Peter's death, but tradition states that Peter was crucified upside down because he thought he was unworthy to be crucified in the same position as his Lord.
