Next Verse |
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife [was] of the daughters of Aaron, and her name [was] Elisabeth.
Note 1 at Lu 1:5: The Herod referred to here was Herod the Great. He was the son of Antipater who was made the Procurator of Judea in 47 B.C. Herod the Great had the title "King of Judaea" conferred on him in 37 B.C. by the Roman senate, at the recommendation of Antony and Octavius. This Herod was the one who built the temple in Jerusalem referred to in Joh 2:20 and Mr 13:1. The events referred to here in the first chapter of Luke happened toward the end of his reign. Herod the Great died in 4 B.C. His son, Archelaus, succeeded him in his throne (Mt 2:22, see note 3 at Lu 3:1). Herod the Great was the one who slaughtered the infants in Bethlehem (Mt 2:16-18).
