There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife [was] of the daughters of Aaron, and her name [was] Elisabeth.
Note 1 at Lk. 1:5: The Herod referred to here is Herod the Great. He was the son of Antipater who was made the Procurator of Judaea in 47 B.C. Herod the Great had the title "King of Judaea" conferred on him in 37 B.C. by the Roman senate, at the recommendation of Antony and Octavius. This Herod is the one who built the temple in Jerusalem referred to in John 2:20 and Mark 13:1. The events referred to here in the first chapter of Luke happened towards the end of his reign. Herod the Great died in 4 B.C. His son, Archelaus, succeeded him in his throne (Mt.2:22). Herod the Great is the one who slaughtered the infants in Bethlehem (Mt. 2:16-18; see note 3 at Lk. 3:1, p. 31).
