Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
Note 2 at Lk. 4:2: The way Luke stated Jesus' temptation is different from Matthew's and Mark's accounts. It is inferred in this verse that Jesus was tempted throughout the forty-day period.
Note 3 at Lk. 4:2: Normally hunger leaves a person after the first few days of a fast. When hunger returns (usually about 40 days), the body is actually beginning to starve and foodmust be eaten. Jesus was starving and this was a very real temptation (see note 1 at Mt. 4:2, p. 36).
