Luke 4:4
Next Verse

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Note 4 at Lk. 4:4: Satan is a personality as shown by the use of a personal pronoun in reference to him. Satan is not a personification of all that is evil or bad as some teach. Satan and his demons are real, but they have been overcome by Jesus (Eph. 1:20-22); and Jesus has given to His followers authority over all Satan's power (Mt. 10:1; Mk. 16:17; Lk. 9:1; 10:18-20). The name, Satan, is a proper name for the devil (Mt. 4:10; Rev. 12:9; see note 2 at Lk. 10:18, p. 248).

Note 5 at Lk. 4:4: Jesus answered every temptation with "it is written," thus illustrating the truth in Ephesians 6:17 that the Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. Since Jesus was the living, eternal Word of God (Jn. 1:1), anything He said would have been equal to any recorded scripture, and yet He quoted from Deuteronomy three times. From this, we can be assured that the recorded scriptures passed on to us need no improving upon and will work against all the wiles of the devil.
