And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing [them] in [their] hands.
Note 1 at Lk. 6:1: In the Bible, the term "corn" is a generic name referring to several cereal grasses, especially wheat, barley, spelt, and millet. This corn was not the "maize" or "Indian corn" known in North America.
Scholars disagree on exactly what crop this term "corn" is referring to. If the crop was wheat, it would be ripening about May and would, therefore, be ripe shortly after Passover. This might be what the phrase "the second sabbath after the first" in this verse is referring to.
Note 2 at Lk. 6:1: The purpose of rubbing the grain in their hands was to get rid of the husks and obtain the food itself. A spiritual application of this is that those who do not meditate on the Word of God do not get beyond the mere intellectual knowledge (husks) into the real nourishment of God's Word.
