Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over [them] are not aware [of them].
Note 3 at Lk. 11:44: Matthew 23 and this passage are the harshest rebukes ever given by our Lord while on earth. It is interesting to note that these rebukes were given to very religious and outwardly holy people. Jesus never condoned sin but He showed mercy towards most sinners (see note 4 at Lk. 7:40, p. 124).
The prostitutes and drunks were not trusting in themselves for salvation. Therefore, Jesus simply offered them forgiveness and let those who had ears to hear receive; but the scribes and Pharisees didn't recognize their need. They thought God couldn't turn down anyone as good as them. This sin of self-righteousness that these Pharisees were committing is anti-Christ ,or against needing a Savior, and so they suffered these stinging rebukes (see note 10 at Mt. 5:20, p. 75).
