But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!
Note 6 at Lk. 12:50: This baptism that Jesus was speaking of is a baptism of suffering. This suffering would be culminated at His crucifixion but it was already in progress. Jesus said that James and John would surely be baptized with His baptism (Mt. 20:22-23; Mk. 10:38-39), and Paul talked of sharing the sufferings of Christ (2 Cor. 1:5; Phil. 1:29; 3:10; 2 Tim. 3:12). Peter also spoke of being partakers of Christ's sufferings (1 Pet. 4:13). Jesus prophesied that all believers would suffer persecution for His sake (Jn. 15:20).
