There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

Note 1 at Lk. 13:1: History is unclear on what actually happened in this instance. Josephus (Ant. XVIII, chapter III) does mention Pilate slaying Galilaeans but it is unclear if that is what Luke refers to here. Some things are certain. Pilate had only been ruling for approximately six years at this time (see note 2 at Lk 3:1, p. 31), so this act had to be a very recent one and it is probable that Jesus already knew about it. The murder of these Galilaeans by Herod was especially offensive to the Jews because their blood was mingled with their sacrifices.
