And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

Note 1 at Lk. 15:15: God had declared swine to be unclean to the Jews (see ref. j at this verse, p. 295) so the fact that this son was now feeding the swine and even desired to eat their food illustrated that he had hit "rock bottom." This depicts the depths of misery into which sin brings the sinner.
