Next Verse |
And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Note 4 at Lu 16:23: The rich man's body was in the grave, and yet this scripture speaks of him lifting up his eyes and seeing Lazarus in Abraham's bosom. Lu 16:24 also speaks of his tongue and his thirst and physical torment in the flame. This man had his physical features and senses although he was without his physical body. Re 6:9 speaks about John seeing the "souls of them that were slain for the word of God."
Our souls mirror our physical shape so closely that it is recognizable (1Sa 28:11-14 and this rich man recognized Lazarus in this verse). Lazarus' soulish body had a "tip of his finger" (Lu 16:24), and it is probable that his soulish body was an exact duplicate of his physical body in size and shape. It probably fit perfectly inside his physical body. This could be a possible explanation of why people with amputated limbs can still at times sense or feel their limbs that have been amputated.
Our souls have senses such as the ability to see, hear, taste, etc. It is this ability of the soul to see and hear to which Jesus referred so many times (see note 3 at Mt 11:15), and it was the eyes of the soul of Elisha's servant that were opened allowing him to see into the spiritual world (2Ki 6:17).
Note 5 at Lu 16:23: There was no way that this rich man could have recognized Abraham from his personal experience. This was, rather, an imparted knowledge that all of us will receive as we enter eternity (1Co 13:12). We can experience this revealed knowledge, as opposed to learned knowledge, in this life too (see note 1 at Lu 2:26, note 4 at Lu 7:40, note 1 at Mt 13:11, and note 2 at Mt 13:12).
