And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:

Note 4 at Lu 18:9: People who are self-righteous always despise others. People cannot compare themselves with God's perfect standard and feel good about themselves (Ro 3:23). To trust in themselves, they have to constantly compare themselves with others (2Co 10:12). This breeds a critical attitude toward others that exalts self by debasing others.
