And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:

Note 4 at Lk. 18:9: People who are self-righteous always despise others. No one can compare himself with God's perfect standard and feel good about himself (Rom. 3:23). To trust in ourselves, we have to constantly compare ourselves with others (2 Cor. 10:12). This breeds a critical attitude towards others which exalts self by debasing others.
