And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, [Thou] Son of David, have mercy on me.

Note 2 at Lk. 18:39: With great frequency the gospel writers relate the relationship between the Lord Jesus and David by the term "Son of David." They thereby show that the Old Testament prophecies concerning the throne of David have their fulfillment in Christ. A great theme of the gospel writers is that Jesus is the seed of David and the eternal king God had promised (Mt. 1:1; 9:27; 12:23; Mk. 10:47-48; 12:35-37; Lk. 18:38-39; 20:41-44).

All of the gospel writers, as well as Paul the apostle, indicated that the expected Christ, the Messiah, would be of the seed of David (Mt. 1:1; 22:42-45; Mk. 12:35-37; Lk. 20:41-44; Jn. 7:42; Rom. 1:3; 2 Tim. 2:8). Matthew begins his gospel listing in great detail the generations of Jesus, proving that He indeed was a direct descendant of David (Mt. 1:1-25). Luke also gives evidence of the fulfillment of God's promise to David in the coming of Christ (2 Sam. 7:12- 13; Lk. 1:27,32,69; 2:4).

Jesus fulfills all of the promises that a seed should never fail to be on David's throne, the coming kingdom over which the Son of David would reign forever (2 Sam. 7:16; Ps. 89:3-4,29,36-37; see note 3 at Mt. 9:6, p. 88).
