For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
Note 1 at Lk. 20:38: This is an astounding commentary on the Old Testament scriptures. It is so simple that once Jesus said it, the truth was obvious and yet others had apparently not seen this truth or the Sadducees would have heard this argument before.
Jesus simply quotes God's statement to Moses from the burning bush, "I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God." He then points out that God spoke of being these men's God in the present tense as contrasted with the past tense. This showed beyond a doubt that they were still alive. What a simple and yet profound insight.
These very Sadducees were astonished (Mt. 22:33) at His answer and they admitted He had answered them well (Lk. 20:39). After this answer, they didn't dare ask Him any more questions at all (Lk. 20:40).
