And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake [it], and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Note 1 at Lk. 22:19: The bread of communion symbolizes the body of Jesus which was broken for us through His sufferings. He not only died for us on the cross but He also bore 39 stripes on His back by which we were healed (Isa. 53:5; Mt. 8:16-17; 1 Pet. 2:24). Partaking of communion should remind us of the emotional and physical salvation that Jesus provided for us.
Note 2 at Lk. 22:19: Communion reminds us of the substitutionary work of Christ (see note 2 at Mk. 14:22, p. 417) and it also is a profession on our part that we have become partakers of Christ and draw our life from His death and resurrection (Jn. 6:53; 1 Cor. 11:26). This second purpose is the reason that Paul said eating and drinking of the Lord's Supper unworthily could bring damnation. A person who takes communion without being cleansed by the blood of Jesus is professing a lie.
