Then took they him, and led [him], and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.
Note 1 at Lk. 22:54: You will notice that we have skipped from Luke 22:54 to 22:63 in our chronological arrangement of Luke's gospel. The reason for this is that, in these verses, Luke records all three of Peter's denials in sequence. This was done by three of the gospel writers to deal with these denials as a unit, but in actuality, the three denials took place over a period of time simultaneously with Jesus' trial at the high priest's palace. Luke, himself, acknowledges the lapse of time between Peter's denials (Lk. 22:58-59).
Therefore, there is no way to deal with Peter's denials and the religious trial of Jesus in a strict chronological sense and yet separate these events. They are intertwined. Matthew and Mark record Peter's denials after they have given the details of Jesus' religious trial while John records one denial before and two after the events of Jesus' trial. We have chosen to list the religious trial of Jesus as one event and Peter's denials as one event and record them in the order that Luke did for the purpose of clarity, but it should be remembered that they happened simultaneously.
