And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
Note 4 at Lk. 24:49: Some have used this scripture to teach that we must "tarry" in order to receive the Holy Ghost. This has led many people to become passive in their seeking the baptism of the Holy Ghost and they wait for years, in some cases, for God to give them the Spirit.
These disciples had to wait because the Holy Spirit wasn't given until the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). That is not the case with us. The Holy Spirit has now been given and is immediately available to all believers (Jn. 14:17) who ask in faith (Jas. 1:6-7).
If you try to apply this statement of Jesus directly to us today, you would have to go to Jerusalem to tarry for the Holy Ghost and of course, that is not the case. As Jesus taught in Luke 11:13, "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?"
