Next Verse |
And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.
Note 1 at Mr 1:35: There are many recorded instances when Jesus prayed all or most of the night (Mt 14:23, Mr 6:46, and Lu 6:12): in Gethsemane (Mt 26:36; Mr 14:32; Lu 22:39, and 45), before daybreak (Mr 1:35), for Peter (Lu 22:31-32), and for the Comforter (Joh 14:16). The longest recorded prayer was after the Last Supper (Joh 17). Jesus also prayed over and blessed food (Mt 14:19, 15:36; Mr 6:41, 8:6-7; Lu 9:16; and Joh 6:11). Other instances when Jesus prayed are Lu 5:16, 10:21, 23:34; Joh 11:41-42, 12:27; and Heb 5:7. The Lord's Prayer, or model prayer, is found in Mt 6:9-13 and Lu 11:1-4. Additional teaching on prayer is given in Mt 6:5-8; Mr 11:24-26; Lu 11:5-13, and 18:1-14.
