And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Note 5 at Mr 2:27: One of the stated purposes of the Sabbath was to give people and their beasts one day of rest each week (Ex 23:12). All of the provisions of the Old Testament Sabbath were meant to bless, not oppress, people. Jesus administered the true spirit of the Law, not just the letter of the Law (2Co 3:6).
