And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Note 5 at Mk. 2:27: One of the stated purposes of the Sabbath was to give mankind and his beasts one day of rest each week (Ex. 23:12). All of the provisions of the Old Testament Sabbath were meant to bless, not oppress man. Jesus administered the true spirit of the law, not just the letter of the law (2 Cor. 3:6).
