And when his friends heard [of it], they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.
Note 1 at Mk. 3:21: Taken in context, Mark is saying that it was when Jesus' friends heard of Him ordaining the twelve disciples (vv. 14-19) that they went out to lay hold on Him. These "friends" had probably not been in agreement before this time but had been able to restrain themselves. However, when Jesus ordained twelve apostles to be trained by Him and to minister for Him, this was perceived as being the height of arrogance and brought about their wrath. Indeed, this would have been a prideful act had Jesus not been the Messiah (Mk. 6:3-4).
