And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed [them].
Note 7 at Mk. 6:13: This is the first time in the New Testament that we see Jesus' followers given His miraculous power to heal the sick. It is implied here and clearly stated in Acts 5:16 that they healed everyone who came to them for healing just as Jesus did. Later, Jesus gave this same power to 70 of His disciples in Luke 10:9. Jesus taught that all things are possible to those that believe (Mk. 9:23) and that those who believe would do the same works that He had done, which included healing the sick (Jn. 14:12). Some of His last instructions to His disciples before His ascension included believers laying hands on the sick so they would recover (Mk. 16:17-18). The true preaching of God's Word is confirmed by signs of healing (Mk. 16:20). Healing is still for today and available to every believer.
Note 8 at Mk. 6:13: This instance is also the first time that anointing with oil is used in the Bible for the purpose of healing. In the Old Testament, priests were anointed (Ex. 28:41; 29:7,29; 30:30; 40:13-15; Lev. 8:12,30; Ps. 133:2); kings were anointed (1 Sam. 9:16; 10:1; 16:12-13; 2 Sam. 2:4; 5:3; 19:10; 1 Ki. 1:39; 19:15-16); and prophets were anointed (1 Ki. 19:16) symbolizing the power and authority of the Spirit of God resting upon them (1 Sam. 16:13). Anointing with oil for the purpose of healing became a common practice in the New Testament church and was commanded for those who were sick, by the apostle James (Jas. 5:14).
