Mark 14:37
Previous Verse
Mark 14:37
Next Verse

And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?

Note 5 at Mk. 14:37: Jesus addressed Peter specifically, even though James and John were also asleep, because of Peter's bold profession that he would never deny Jesus regardless of what others did. Jesus was pointing out that if Peter could not stand with Jesus one hour in prayer, then he would never be able to stand with Jesus through persecution.

Note 6 at Mk. 14:37: Peter's denial began here. By failing to pray as Jesus instructed him to, Peter did not have the strength to stand in the face of persecution. No believer desires to deny our Lord, but failing to provide for spiritual health is the first step in that direction. Remembering this will help motivate us to seek the Lord as we know we should.
