Next Verse |
And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take [your] rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Note 8 at Mk. 14:41: Jesus' statement to His disciples to, "Sleep on now, and take your rest" was not speaking of physical sleep as can be seen by His statement to them in the very next verse to, "Rise up, let us go." He would not tell them to keep on sleeping and then wake them up.
The disciples had also been asleep spiritually, i.e. they had not been watching with Jesus in prayer as He had commanded them to (v. 34). Jesus, in sorrow, acknowledged their failure and prophetically spoke of this condition continuing with His words, "Sleep on now." The disciples didn't wake up spiritually until after Jesus' resurrection.
