Note 6 at Mk. 15:25: The Jews began counting time from sunrise (see note 3 at Jn. 1:39, p. 40). That means that the third hour spoken of here, when Jesus was crucified, was 9:00 a.m. according to our reckoning. After three hours of Jesus hanging on the cross, there was three hours of darkness until 3:00 p.m. (Mk. 15:33; also Mt. 27:45; Lk. 23:44). At 3:00 p.m., Jesus cried with a loud voice and gave up the ghost (vv. 34-37; also Mt. 27:46-50; Lk. 23:46) after six hours of agony on the cross.
