Matthew 5:3
Previous Verse
Matthew 5:3
Next Verse

Blessed [are] the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Note 4 at Mt. 5:3: The Greek word translated "poor" here in Matthew 5:3 is "ptochos" and is used 31 times in the New Testament. In 28 of those times, it is clearly referring to financially poor people. Revelation 3:17 and Luke 6:20, along with this verse, use the word metaphorically. When used this way, it is speaking of being inferior, inadequate, or lacking, such as when we speak of poor attendance or poor health. Jesus is telling those who recognize their spiritual inadequacies to be happy, because help has come. They can now receive a new spirit (2 Cor. 5:17) by letting the kingdom of God come within them (Lk. 17:21; Rom. 14:17).
