And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell.
Note 18 at Mt. 5:29: This is to be taken in a comparative sense just as Jesus' statements in Luke 14:26 can be clearly seen to be comparative when contrasted with Matthew 10:37. Jesus is not advocating dismembering our bodies. He is simply saying that resisting temptation should be more important to us than preserving the parts of our bodies.
