Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
Note 2 at Mt. 26:38: Jesus' sufferings for us were more than just physical. Here, before any of His physical sufferings, He suffered emotionally to the point of death. As Luke records (Lk. 22:43), an angel had to come and give Him strength or the emotional struggle alone would have killed Him (cp. with note 4 at Lk. 22:44, p. 449).
