And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

Note 3 at Mt. 27:14: Pilate marvelled greatly that Jesus kept silent. This was unusual behavior. No doubt, Pilate had condemned many men to death and had witnessed the entire spectrum of human emotions as men faced death. However, he had never seen anyone so fearless that they didn't even try to justify and deliver themselves before their accusers.
