Philippians 1:3 |
Next Verse |
I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,
Note 1 at Phil. 1:3: The proper motivation for all ministry is love for God. If ministers only shared the Word because of the friendships they could make and other positive benefits, they wouldn't be ministering long. Be that as it may, it is wonderful when the gospel is received and relationships are made. Paul expresses some of that joy here.
The Philippians were some of Paul's closest friends and it shows in this statement. He rejoiced every time he thought of the Philippians. That's quite a testimony. I'm sure there were other groups he ministered to who didn't bring a smile to his face when he thought of them. The Philippians had supported Paul more than any other church (Phil. 4:15-16).
Note 2 at Phil. 1:3: The Greek word MNEIA, which was translated "remembrance" here was also translated "make mention" in Romans 1:9, Ephesians 1:16, and Philemon 4. In each of those instances it is clear that Paul was speaking of praying for those people. In this instance, Paul goes on to mention his prayers for the Philippians (v. 4), so the remembrances he is referring to here are times of prayer. As he prayed and the Philippians came to his mind, he always rejoiced for the fellowship he had with them in the gospel (v. 5).
