But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.

Note 6 at Phil. 1:17: Many true believers were inspired by Paul's faithfulness in the face of persecution and they had become even bolder in their presentation of the gospel. Paul's obvious love for the Lord had caused them to love God more and to love the apostle Paul also for his selfless example. All this advanced the gospel.
