Philippians 3:14
Next Verse

I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Note 6 at Phil. 3:14: Paul used a metaphor of a runner running in a race. The Greek verb Paul used for "I press" is DIOKO, and is used figuratively of one running swiftly in a race to reach the goal. It also carries the idea of one who pursues, or seeks eagerly after, or earnestly endeavors to acquire the prize (Heb. 12:1-2; Thayer). Since the "prize" of eternal life cannot be acquired by works of righteousness which we have done (Ti. 3:5), Paul must be thinking of the rewards that come from service to the Lord (see note 3 at v. 12)
