For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath [whereof] to glory; but not before God.

Note 2 at Ro 4:2: Our own good works will only allow us to boast if we're comparing ourselves with other people (2Co 10:12). However, in the sight of God, not one of us has anything to brag about. We have all come short of the glory of God (see notes 5 and 6 at Ro 3:23).
