Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

Note 26 at Rom. 8:12: Paul is saying that our flesh (see note 3 at Rom. 7:18, p. 790) never helped us. It has been rendered powerless through sin (see note 24 at v. 10). It is only through the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit that the Christian has any hope of living in victory. Therefore, we are indebted to the Spirit and should yield to Him.
