Thereβs a lot of misunderstanding today about true salvation andΒ especiallyΒ the baptism of the Holy Spirit.Β Before we can talk about the power of the Holy Spirit,Β itβs importantΒ to understand what true salvation really isβbecause everything starts there.Β
Jesus taught in Matthew 13:19 that when someone hears the Word of God andΒ doesnβt understand it, the enemy comes immediately and steals it away.Β So, understanding is the key. Without it, the truth never takes root in our hearts.Β
And thatβs exactly where a lot of people get tripped upβmisunderstanding what salvation reallyΒ is.Β
A lot of people believe that being a βgood personβ is enough. They think,Β Well, I donβt steal, I donβt lie much, I help peopleΒ . . .Β surely God will accept me.Β
Others believe that if their good outweighs their bad, God will let them into heaven. But you canβt save someone who doesnβt believe they need saving.Β
TheΒ logic that good people go to heaven and bad people go to hellΒ isΒ not what the Bible teaches.Β The Bible teaches that only people who’ve accepted forgiveness go to heaven,Β and people who didnβt accept forgiveness go to hell.Β
Jesus told a story in Luke 18 about two men who went into the temple to pray. One was a Phariseeβa religious leaderβand the other was a tax collector, a man despised by society. The Pharisee looked at that tax collector and said,Β βGod, I thank You that Iβm not like other men.βΒ He went onΒ toΒ list all the good things heβd done. But the tax collectorΒ wouldnβt even lift his eyes to heaven. He beat his chest and said,Β βGod, be merciful to me a sinnerβΒ (LukeΒ 18:13).Β And Jesus said that the tax collector, not the Pharisee, went home justified before God.Β Why? Because salvation isnβt about comparing yourself to someone else. Itβs not about measuring up.Β The Word says inΒ Romans 3:23,Β βFor all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.βΒ That means all of us. Every single one.Β You see, one of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking that God grades on a curveβthat as long as youβre βbetter than most,β youβre okay. But Godβs standard isnβt your neighbor, your spouse, or even your pastor. Godβs standard is perfectionβpureΒ holinessβand none of us meet that on our own.Β Romans 3:10 says,Β βThere is none righteous, no, not one.βΒ On our own, weβreΒ totallyΒ lost.Β UntilΒ youΒ understand that,Β youΒ canβt really be saved.Β Now, I know that can sound harsh, but itβs actually the best news in the worldβbecause when you realize you canβt save yourself, you finally stop trying to. You finally turn to the only One who can.Β Iβve noticedΒ two kinds of people who miss salvation.Β One says, βIβve done too much wrong; God could never forgive me.β The other says, βIβm good enough already.β But both are wrong. Whether youβve broken every commandment or just one, itβs the same in Godβs eyes. James 2:10 says that if you keep the wholeΒ Law but offend in one point, youβre guilty of all.Β Thatβs a sobering thought, but it also means this: the ground is level at the foot of the cross. Nobody stands higher or lower there.Β Thatβs good newsΒ because no matter what youβve doneβno matter how far youβve fallen or how many times youβve failedβJesus already paid the price. The only thing you bring to the table is your sin and your need for a Savior.Β Jesus didnβt come to be an accessory to your life. He came toΒ beΒ your life.Β You could say it this way:Β Jesus plus anything equals nothing. But Jesus plus nothing equals everything.Β When you putΒ allΒ your faith in Himβnot in yourself, not in your good works, not in your church attendanceβthatβs when true salvation happens. Thatβs the simpleΒ Gospel.Β That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.Β – Romans 10:9Β Maybe as youβre reading this, youβreΒ realizingΒ youβve been trusting in your own goodness more than in what Jesus did for you. Or maybe youβve felt like you were too far gone for God to want you.Β I tell you,Β bothΒ of thoseΒ areΒ liesΒ from the enemy.Β Godβs Word says inΒ Romans 3:24Β that we areΒ βjustified freely byΒ his grace.βΒ Freely. That means youΒ canβt earn it. You just receive it.Β Godβs grace isnβt a reward for good behaviorβitβs a gift for those humble enough to admit they need it.Β And when you do thatβwhen you stop comparing, stop striving, stop trying to fix yourselfβthatβs when His Spirit moves in and makes youΒ newΒ from the inside out.Β You know, Iβve seen people from every backgroundβdrug addicts, business leaders, teenagers, retireesβall come to that same moment of surrender, and it changes everything. Tears turn to peace, fear turns to joy, and shame disappears. Itβs not about religion. Itβs about relationship.Β All have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Rom.Β 3:23), but all can be justified freely by His grace.Β That includes you.Β Once youβve truly been born againβnot just acknowledging God exists, but entering into a real relationship with Himβthereβs another step that the Bible calls every believer toΒ take: receiving theΒ baptism of the Holy Spirit. This is a separate experience from salvation,Β though it doesnβt have toΒ happenΒ long after (Acts 1:4β5).Β Jesus made this clear to His disciples just before He ascended:Β βWait for the promise of the Father. . . .Β For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days henceβΒ (Acts 1:4β5).Β Even after seeing His miracles, walking with Him, and believing in His resurrection, they were told not to go out and minister until theyΒ hadΒ received this power. Why? Because God didΒ not wantΒ themΒ operating inΒ theirΒ own strength, wisdom, or ability.Β Thatβs why their impact was so powerful: they waited to receive power from on high (Acts 4:31),Β which wasΒ the baptism of the Holy Spirit.Β Today, many who represent the Lord havenβt received that baptism. TheyΒ get up andΒ speak words. Some of those words may be true,Β but if theyβre not anointed by the Holy Spirit, they wonβt carry the same power or impact as words inspired and empowered by Him.Β The first-century church didnβt just speak wordsβtheyΒ demonstratedΒ them. Acts 4:29β30 says,Β βGrant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word;Β . . .Β that signs and wonders may be done by the name of your holy child Jesus.βΒ When you receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God comes alive in a new way (John 14:26Β andΒ 16:13). This is how the early church went fromΒ beingΒ fearful disciples to bold witnesses who healed the sick, cast out demons, and proclaimed theΒ Gospel with miraculous power (Acts 4:29β31). It is the difference between superficial faith and supernatural living.Β In my own life, IΒ was born again at age eight, but it wasnβt until I was eighteen, when I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, that my faith became active and visible.Β When that happened, everything changed. It was like an explosion inside me. The Word of God came alive, and the Spirit began teaching and guiding me into all truth (John 14:26Β andΒ 16:13). He brings Scripture to remembrance, quickens it, and empowers our lives.Β I was once extremely shy, barely able to say βgood morningβ in high school. Now, by Godβs power, I speak boldly, share His Word, and see lives transformed.Β The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not optional for a powerful Christian life.Β If youβve been born again and know with certainty that you would go to be with the Lord if you were to die today, yet havenβt received this baptism, know that there is a greater dimension of Godβs power available to you.Β ThisΒ baptism is available to anyone willing to receive it (Acts 2:39). Salvation opens the door, but the Spirit empowers the life.Β I strongly encourage you to get myΒ teaching,Β The New You & The Holy Spirit.Β Itβs available in multiple formats andΒ will guide you step by step into receivingΒ salvationΒ (if you havenβt already) andΒ theΒ baptism ofΒ theΒ Holy Spirit.Β It willΒ alsoΒ help youΒ understand the giftsΒ of the SpiritΒ andΒ how toΒ liveΒ a truly supernatural life.Β HeavenΒ is a long way off for many of us. What are we going to doβjust muddle through and struggle through this life? Most Christians know that thereβs something more, andΒ Iβm telling you thatΒ thisΒ βmoreβ isΒ the baptism of the Holy Spirit.Β Why Comparing Yourself to OthersΒ Wonβt Save YouΒ
