Why Your Voice Matters
Recently, I had a great conversation with David and Tim Barton about the role Christians should play in politics today. David and Tim are well-known for their knowledge of American history and their efforts to reconnect people with the biblical heritage that shaped our nation. If you’ve ever wondered why your involvement in politics matters—or how it’s being undermined—keep reading. Churches Have Always Shaped Political Ideas There’s no denying that Christian voices in politics are being pushed aside. But this is about more than just votes—it’s about the future of our nation. Did you know that many of the foundational ideas that shaped America came from churches and Christian teaching? Throughout history, churches have been instrumental in helping people think critically about government and justice from a biblical perspective. Today, we see a concerning trend of pastors removing American flags from their churches and Christians being pressured to stay out of political conversations. That’s dangerous because it plays into the broader effort to separate faith from public life. Understanding “Christian Nationalism” You’ve probably heard the term “Christian nationalism” thrown around recently. It’s a label designed to discredit anyone who holds conservative, biblical values. It’s used to make Christian voices in politics seem extreme or dangerous. But let me tell you something—Christian values have long guided public policy in ways that benefit everyone. At its core, Christianity teaches principles of justice, mercy, and the common good. By advocating for policies based on the Bible, Christians have historically promoted laws that protect life, freedom, and human dignity. The Faith of the Founding Fathers Many of America’s Founding Fathers were deeply religious men. Despite modern efforts to paint them as deists or irreligious, the evidence shows that they relied on God. During the First Continental Congress, for example, they started their meetings with prayer and called for a national time of prayer and fasting. But critics today are trying to rewrite history by villainizing the Founding Fathers. Their goal is simple: if they can sever the connection between our nation’s founding principles and our Christian roots, they can undermine the Constitution and the biblical values that have influenced American governance for centuries. This revisionist history is part of a larger attempt to remove Christian influence from public life. But we can’t let that happen. The same biblical principles that helped build this nation are just as important today as they were back then. The Erosion of Christian Influence There’s a growing movement to replace God-given rights with government-granted ones. This shift is at the heart of Marxist and Communist ideologies, which seek to secularize and control the moral framework of society. But as Christians, we believe our rights come from God, not the government. We cannot allow that foundational truth to be erased. Why Christian Engagement in Politics Matters During our conversation, we also talked about why it’s so important for Christians to be involved in politics today. David Barton put it simply: if Christians don’t engage in the political process, a void will be filled by values that don’t align with the Bible. In John 10:11–14, Jesus described Himself as the Good Shepherd who protects His sheep, and in a similar way, we are called to protect and uphold the values we hold dear. Our involvement in politics isn’t about power; it’s about service. We are called to glorify God and serve others by helping to shape laws and policies that reflect biblical truth. If we stay silent, we abandon that responsibility. Celebrating Victories for Religious Freedom We’ve seen some tremendous victories for religious freedom in recent years. One of the most significant changes was the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Lemon test, which had restricted religious expression for decades. Now states like Oklahoma and Louisiana are reintroducing the Bible into schools and allowing the Ten Commandments to be displayed in classrooms. These victories were made possible because President Trump appointed judges who respect the Constitution and uphold religious liberty. His presidency marked a turning point for our nation and restored freedoms that had been suppressed for years. It’s clear to me that God used Trump in this role, much like He used flawed people like Samson in the Bible. Trump may not be perfect, but his policies have undeniably advanced the cause of religious freedom in America. The Overturn of Roe v. Wade: A Historic Moment When Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973, many Christians dedicated their lives to opposing it and protecting unborn life. Although some never saw their efforts realized, they would be rejoicing today. The Supreme Court, through judges who honor the Constitution, overturned Roe v. Wade, resulting in significant restrictions on abortion across twenty-four states. This victory didn’t come through a perfect president, but through one who appointed people willing to uphold biblical values. As Christians, when we vote, it’s important to focus on the policies and the values a candidate stands for, not just their personality. If we make decisions based on who seems nicer, we miss what’s truly at stake. We Are in a Spiritual Battle The challenges we face today aren’t just political—they’re spiritual. Ephesians 6:12 tells us that our struggle isn’t against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world and spiritual wickedness in high places. The battle for the heart of this nation is one of morality, truth, and freedom. President Trump, despite his personal flaws, fought for life, religious freedom, and the strength of our military. His policies on government, borders, and national security were significant, but often overlooked due to media bias. We’re also dealing with the manipulation of information by big tech companies. Social media platforms and search engines are influencing elections by controlling what we see and hear, favoring certain candidates while silencing others. This is part of the spiritual battle we’re in—and we cannot afford to be complacent or discouraged. Encouragement for Christians Today This is a war for the soul of America, and we need to engage strategically. Ephesians 5:15–16 tells us to “walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Now is the time for Christians to rise up and stand firm in our faith. We are called to be salt and light in the world (Matt. 5:13–16), bringing the truth of the Gospel into every area of life—including politics. That means voting with biblical values and encouraging others to do the same. The Urgency of 2024 I believe the 2024 elections are the most important of my lifetime. Our nation stands at a crossroads. This November could either be a turning point or the point of no return. I encourage you to get involved, vote your values, and become a part of the solution. Don’t sit on the sidelines. As Christians, we have a responsibility to be active participants in shaping the world around us. I also encourage you to check out our God and Country CD and DVD series. It’s filled with insights on America’s rich Christian heritage and will really bless you. Final Thoughts As the Bible says in Proverbs 14:34, “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan (Prov. 29:2). There’s plenty of groaning going on today, and it’s because we don’t have enough righteous leaders in authority. As Christians, we are the ones who can restore righteousness in this nation. It’s time for us to get involved, be informed, and bring the truth of God’s Word back into the political arena. Watch or listen to this powerful teaching below.
